About > About CNPEN

Placed under the aegis of the CCNE, the role of the Pilot National Committee on Digital Ethics (CNPEN) is to issue opinions on the referrals entrusted to it, to enlighten the public debate on digital ethics issues and to draft proposals relating to the perpetuation of national reflection on digital ethics.

The CNPEN was set up in December 2019 at the request of the Prime Minister and placed under the aegis of the National Consultative Ethics Committee (CCNE). Twenty-seven people from different backgrounds, five of whom also sit on the CCNE, have been appointed to address digital ethics issues in a comprehensive manner. Its director is Claude Kirchner.

The role of this committee is to inform both individual and collective decisions by raising awareness and providing information to civil society, public and private institutions and the government.
In his mission letter, the Prime Minister formulated three referrals - the autonomous vehicle (opinion published in May 2021), conversational agents (opinion published in November 2021) and the intervention of artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis (to be published soon).
